Simon Bastable Racing #19

2019 is our fourth year of competition, and with two North Gloucester Road Racing club championships to our name already we will be looking to add a third this year aboard a Yamaha R6.

Stay up to date with a full report from each round of the 2019 season, alongside news and views from pitlane and our analysis of any new kit we’ve tried out as the year goes on.

I’ve spent twenty years messing around on or with bikes in one form or another. I started out at fourteen, abusing my brothers DT 50 around the field nextdoor when he wasn’t looking and ’ve been lucky enough to never be without a motorcycle of one sort or another ever since.

For the past three years, racing motorcycles has been my all consuming passion. My R6 is about as well sorted a bike as you could wish for to go club racing, having been fettled and fiddled with for hundreds hours in our garage and adorned with shiny upgrades trawled from all over eBay and online forums. I’d call it ‘Supersport ish’, meaning a supersport chassis with a superstock engine.

Whilst the DT and the R6 are the book ends of my biking career, an FZR250 and an NC30 are a couple of my favourites from the best of the rest and were both superb bikes for learing your craft, loads of fun, revvy, eminently thrashable and with light, accurate handling. What’s kept me coming back to bikes again and again is that whatever the day, bike or environment, the absolute unfetted joy of being on two wheels remains exactly the same.

I started racing in 2016 with North Gloucester Road Racing Club.

2018 Season
After winning the first two Street Stock races of the season I broke three bones in my leg and ankle in a crash in the Open 600 race on Sunday morning. I had surgery the following day and managed to get back to compete in Septembers Motorcycle Grand National event at Castle Combe where I scored three third places finishes in the Street Stock class despite only getting off crutches one week before after four months on them.
